vSphere Intel Optane Persistent Memory

"Solution Snapshot: VMware vSphere with Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory (PMem).

Read this two-page brochure to discover how Intel Optane PMem solves challenges such as DRAM not scaling fast enough to keep up with today's datasets; rising memory costs; and the need to optimize performance, cost, and capacity. These challenges make it increasingly difficult to cost-efficiently meet service-level agreements (SLAs).

Intel Optane PMem in combination with VMware vSphere can be used in many use cases, including trusted enterprise virtualization, in-memory databases, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), DevOps for microservices and containers, and disaster recovery.

By enabling tiered memory, Intel Optane PMem enables organizations to

  • Affordably expand memory capacity
  • Reduce total cost ownership
  • Gain immediate benefit with no application modifications

In a nutshell, you can increase efficiency, maintain key service levels, and improve overall value.

For example, instead of 768 GB of DRAM, you can create a tiered memory system consisting of 256 GB of DRAM and 1024 GB of Intel Optane PMem -- essentially getting the same memory capacity for less cost. Or, to affordably improve capabilities, like higher capacity and more VMs, replace a single tier of 1024 GB of DRAM with a tiered memory system consisting of 512 GB of DRAM and 2048 GB of Intel Optane PMem--doubling the memory capacity for the same cost.

Up to 25% Lower Cost/VM: Implementing tiered memory solutions with Intel Optane PMem can improve overall TCO. Savings can accrue from server consolidation, or from lower CapEx when configuring systems with lower amounts of expensive DRAM.

Better Efficiency: With more memory available, it's possible to add more VMs to each vSphere host, which can improve server consolidation and drive up CPU utilization for better data center efficiency. Fewer servers can lower energy usage and operational costs as well as reduce software licensing costs.

The bottom line is that Intel Optane PMem lets you optimize capacity, performance, and cost while doing more for less—with ultimate scalability."
