Sustainable Computing for a Sustainable Future

To address climate change, we need immediate action through systems change, technological innovation, and global collaboration. Intel is leveraging its experience and international influence as one of the largest semiconductor designers and manufacturers to move us all towards a future of more sustainable computing.

We Put Sustainability at the Heart of our Business

Intel is advancing more sustainable computing across our business: eco-conscious semiconductor manufacturing, more environmentally conscious data centers and networks, circularity across our products’ lifecycles, and more energy-efficient products, platforms, and software.

Eco-Conscious Semiconductor Manufacturing

We are innovating to reduce the impact of our semiconductor manufacturing across the board. We aim to reduce our chemical footprint, and we work to improve indicators such as materials use, renewable electricity use, supply chain emissions, water use, and waste to landfill.

Energy-Conscious Products and Services

The fight against climate change requires products and services that are more energy conscious. We are advancing the energy efficiency of products such as our Intel® XeonTM and Intel® CoreTM processors and our XPU processors. We are also striving to innovate through green software, AI telemetry, edge and IoT tools, and ethernet interconnect.

Circularity

Intel’s focus on circularity involves designing for product creation, use, re-use and end-of-life. We're working to support the circular economy with longer-life product support, modular products, and improved product packaging.
Our subsidiary, Intel Resale Corporation, resells, recycles and upcycles fab semiconductor equipment, surplus ATM and sort equipment, excess product inventory, electronic waste and precious metals globally.

We Are Working Together to Accelerate More Sustainable Computing

Through next-level cooperation and collaboration across ecosystems, we 're bringing together unique skills to achieve the speed and scale required to combat climate change. Everyone is working together—customers, investors, competitors, governments, and NGO peers—to drive progress, promote tech innovation, and hit sustainability targets.

Collaboration Makes a World of Difference

Collaboration is the key to realizing the era of more sustainable computing. Intel is uniquely positioned to connect compute ecosystems. So, we’re partnering with our customers and industry peers to reduce emissions and promote industry-wide improvements in sustainability indicators. Our initiatives focus on semiconductor manufacturing, information communications technology, green software, and NGO alignment.

We choose our collaborations with intent, focused on impact needed. They include:

  • Working with our PC manufacturer customers to create more sustainable and energy-efficient PCs.
  • Partnering with our cloud service provider customers on data center energy efficiency and carbon reduction metrics.
  • Engaging with industry and policymakers around the world to apply technology that reduces emissions across high-impact industries. Efforts include the Digital Climate Alliance, Open Compute Project, Green Software Initiative, The Semiconductor Climate Consortium and The Digital Europe Programme.

Delivering Value with Products and Tools

Intel can help give you the edge in reaching your sustainability targets with products that benefit from our unique and integrated manufacturing and supply chain capabilities. Plus, we offer innovative tools and services to help you quantify your success. Carbon impact calculators, processor and system advisory tools, and our Intel® Data Center Manager provide near real-time insights that allow you to make proactive decisions about your sustainable computing goals.

The Journey Towards More Sustainable Computing: Intel Thoughts and Perspectives

Sustainability Priorities Resonate Throughout Corporate IT Strategy, Operations, and Purchasing

Ensuring PCs are more sustainable has many downstream effects on an organization’s overall environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) goals, which means IT decision makers play a vital role as device purchasers. This Intel-commissioned Forrester paper explores how sustainability goals impact PC purchasing decisions.

Reverse Logistics in the Circular Economy

The circular economy encourages businesses to re-envision traditional linear product strategies and manage environmental impact from “cradle to cradle.” One key component of the circular economy is Reverse Logistics, the process of returning used products and components for re-use.

Intel’s Challenge: Net-Zero GHGs Across Operations

Intel has pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) in its global operations by 2040. In terms of technology development cycles, that's just around the corner. We're already making significant progress, having reduced almost 75% of GHGs over the last decade. In this blog, Executive Vice Presidents Dr. Ann B. Kelleher and Keyvan Esfarjani offer an update on the critical work now underway to meet this commitment.

Intel and the Environment

We're on track to make significant contributions in four operational areas: water, energy, climate and waste. Our 2030 sustainability goals include the following:

  • Achieving net positive water.
  • Using 100% renewable electricity across our global operations.
  • Reducing our absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 10% (from 2020 baseline).
  • Sending zero waste to landfills.

By 2040, we aim to reach net-zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions across our global operations.
