The Display Catalyst with a Smaller Footprint

Discover how you can get next-level, cost-effective interoperability, scalability, and standardization that meets today’s dynamic needs for compute display solutions.

Intel® SDM Intelligent Display Experiences

With the Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM), display solutions manufacturers, integrators, and resellers gain standardization, interoperability, and scalability with higher quality and connectivity at a lower design and development cost.

Simply the Smarter Choice

As digital displays get thinner and power-efficient performance becomes more critical, the Intel® SDM specification and reference design delivers the intelligence, standardization, interoperability, and connectivity you need in a form factor targeted for integration into ultraslim all-in-one designs.

Whether you need small, powerful display solutions for manufacturing designs, new market alternatives that deliver beyond a format factory, or a display solution that integrates into a system as a network endpoint, Intel® SDM with Intel® architecture is the catalyst you’ve been looking for to deliver scalable interactive display experiences.

Technical brief: Intel® SDM

Why Design Display Systems with Intel® SDM?

Maximum Flexibility in Minimum Space

Deliver enriching visual experiences while saving cost via a sleek, all-in-one, ultraslim shape with no casing. With Intel® SDM’s flexible, portable design, access full workload capabilities while making the most of space—even in hard-to-reach areas.

Future-Oriented Capabilities Now

Upgrade systems and scale workloads with built-in, optimized processing capabilities and high-speed connections. Eliminate external I/O with the Intel® SDM custom I/O receptacle board. Sustain new platforms, features, and technologies like 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and FPGAs. Support display resolutions of up to 8K HDR and beyond.

Sleek Intelligence and Interoperability

Gain the same level of intelligence and interoperability as the Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) but in a smaller form factor—choose either Intel® SDM–S (60 mm x 100 mm) or Intel® SDM–L (175 mm x 100 mm).

Simplified Integration

Reduce system complexity with modular, flexible options for different components, processors, operating systems, and types of interfaces with compatibility for an array of standards. Integrate into visual IoT applications without additional cabling through plug-and-play readiness.

Use in a Variety of Application Scenarios

Leverage broad applications for commercial and embedded use cases for 24" to 100" display sizes, including all-in-ones (AIOs), LED video walls, large-format interactive flat panel displays (IFPDs), inclusive smart boards and projectors, and streaming audiovisual over internet protocol (AVoIP).

In the Words of Customers and Partners

“Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM) is a natural and future-proof form factor evolution for high-quality digital signage at retail locations, advanced-feature interactive whiteboards in offices, and mission-critical applications in transportation and control rooms. We are working with Intel® SDM ecosystem partners to provide hassle-free and economically reasonable solutions for all markets and continuously add state-of-the-art technologies to support 8K resolution, advanced hybrid meeting platform, and ever-increasing security requirements.”

Sam Maeda
Senior vice president, Sharp NEC Display Solutions, Ltd.

“The Intel® SDM platform simplifies display and video wall installations by reducing costs and complexities, as well as by being future-proof. Apantac SDM cards accept various input formats—12G-SDI, SDVoE, NDI, and HDBaseT—and interface to an SDM-capable display. Our SDM modules are transforming the market for broadcast, AV, and video wall installations by leveraging the ‘smart’ in SDM.”

Thomas Tang
President, Apantac

“Standardizing interfaces and supporting HDMI 2.1 in professional displays is critical to enabling higher performance in signage, retail, and many other applications. The Intel® Smart Display Module is a big step in this direction, which will help lower costs and widen adoption of 8K displays as well.”

Chris Chinnock
Executive director, the 8K Association

“Using Intel® SDM, installers can expand the ease of use of our infrastructure to every compatible display by simply integrating the AV-over-IP decoders straight into the back of the display, making every screen connected.”

Richard Jonker
Vice president of business development, NetGear, EMEA & APAC

Frequently Asked Questions

As digital displays get thinner and power-efficient performance becomes more critical, the Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM) specification and reference design delivers the same level of intelligence and interoperability as the Open Pluggable Specification (OPS) but in a smaller form factor targeted for integration into ultraslim all-in-one designs. No design housing means reduced cost. And the sleek design allows it to be fully integrated into visual IoT applications that require minimal space with maximum performance, such as hospitality screens and bedside terminals.

Intel® SDM comes in two form factor size options—the Intel® SDM Small (Intel® SDM–S), 60 mm x 100 mm, and Intel® SDM Large (Intel® SDM–L), 175 mm x 100 mm, with a maximum z-height of 20 mm, without enclosure. This allows for new and scalable designs. And, by incorporating high-speed connectivity with a custom I/O receptacle board, the need for external I/O is eliminated. Intel® SDM easily upgrades from basic to extended features that support 8K resolution and beyond, including video data capture.

A display module processes data in a way that creates visual output, or a presentation of information, to a digital screen. Display modules are typically embedded in a larger technology system and are highly integrated and attuned to interact with their environment. A display module will show information via digital signage, desktop displays, all-in-one monitors, large- format interactive flat panel displays, smart projectors, and audiovisual over internet protocol (AVoIP) for streaming experiences.
