Server Reboots After Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux*
After installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux*, the system can reboot when the X Window System* starts. The screen can also flicker, or you are unable to install in GUI mode. Text mode installs, and completes normally.
The MGA video driver was updated in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7* release. Install in text mode, then use the generic VESA video driver. The two methods for installation are:
Method 1
Boot to text mode, and type the following command:
system-config-display --set-driver=vesa
Method 2
Change the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file directly. Find the Device section, and change the line:
Driver mga, to Driver vesa.
The X Window System should then start successfully.
