Critical Warning(19536): Report Metastability (Fast vid3 100C Model): Found 609 synchronizer chains, 1 with unsafe MTBF.

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

You may see the above Critical Warning message or similar in the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 22.3 when compiling a design that instances the F-tile CPRI PHY Intel® FPGA IP, the F-tile Interlaken Intel® FPGA IP, and the F-tile Serial Lite IV Intel® FPGA IP and targeting an Intel Agilex® device with Package Code R47A.

This is because, for the Intel Agilex devices with Package Code R47A, these IPs currently do not support Tile Speed Grade -3 due to Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) limitation.

Intel recommends using a faster Tile Speed Grade device unless the reported MTBF is within the acceptable range for the user's application.

    Resolution

There are two workarounds to avoid this warning:

    1. Users can select a faster speed-grade device. An example device with Tile Speed Grade 2 is: AGMF039R47A2E2VR0
    2. Add the QSF assignment: set_global_assignment -name MIN_MTBF_REQUIREMENT 9 ( Notes: User can overwrite the 9 to a lower value acceptable for user's application)

This problem has been fixed in the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 22.4.
