As densities of CPLDs and Intel® FPGAs increase and package sizes decrease, it becomes difficult to program these devices out-of-circuit. Corelis products, such as the ScanPlus Flash Programmer in-system device programmer, ScanPlus Runner test and in-system programming executive and ScanExpress Runner gang test and in-system programming executive, have the capability of executing Jam Standard Test and Programming Language (STAPL) Files (.jam) for programming of Intel® FPGA JTAG in-system programmability (ISP)-capable devices.

Programming in-circuit provides a number of benefits and is desirable in development, production, and service environments. For development, engineers can change configuration information stored in the device during the development process. For production, in-circuit programming allows devices to remain on the shelf in an unprogrammed or blank state. These blank devices can then be installed at assembly and programmed in-circuit, thus reducing programming and tracking costs. Following delivery of a product to a customer, a field-service technician, or the customer, can download new configuration information without taking the system apart. That reduces the cost of "servicing" the equipment.

High Volume Production Systems

Corelis’ ScanExpress enables concurrent (gang) testing and in-system programming of CPLDs and flash devices for multiple boards using a single PC and a single operator. ScanExpress addresses very high-speed boundary-scan applications and high-volume production. The ScanExpress family of products dramatically increases test and in-system programming throughput by applying innovative and proprietary techniques.
